Yes, that's the norm. Most of our maintenance clients have software written by previous vendors or internal developers who are no longer available.

How long does it take to 'learn' the existing software?

For average-complexity software: 2–4 weeks of onboarding. We always include this time in the initial estimate.

What if the software has no documentation?

That's the most common situation. We read the code, ask questions of the users, and rebuild the documentation as part of the process.

How much does monthly maintenance cost?

It depends on the volume of work. We work both per project (single fix or feature) and on monthly retainer contracts with dedicated hours.
